How Does the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Compare to the Honda HR-V?

The new Subaru Crosstrek and Honda HR-V SUVs hover in the same price range and appeal to similar buyers, yet they are not equivalent. Subaru includes standard symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Honda offers neither. For West Lafayette-area drivers who regularly tackle slick winter-weather conditions, uneven or unpaved terrain, and roads that change just a few miles outside town, these features make a huge difference.

The well-equipped Honda HR-V has a loyal following. However, the new Subaru Crosstrek covers more ground, handles more conditions, and offers a more robust standard safety suite-all of which translate into an advantage over the Honda HR-V and provide greater value.

The Zeigler Subaru of Lafayette team invites you to take a closer look at how these models measure up across various areas, from performance and starting price to standard connectivity and safety features, and what that means for car buyers near Frankfort shopping in this segment.

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek

Although the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek is the smallest model in the lineup, it packs quite a punch. It offers seven diverse trims powered by a 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder engine, available in gas and hybrid variants. Gas-powered models deliver 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and hybrid models produce 194 total horsepower. Both powertrains support a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, except in the Wilderness variant, which can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The Subaru Crosstrek provides 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and, like other Subaru models, comes standard-equipped with Symmetrical All-wheel drive (AWD), a Lineartronic CVT with paddle shifters, and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. Fold the rear seats down and expand the cargo area from 19.9 cubic feet behind the second row to 54.7 cubic feet of space. For 2026, the Subaru Crosstrek also comes standard with rear-seat side airbags. The standard features and equipment cover a lot of ground before you even consider which trim to select.

It has no published towing capacity figure, and comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or optional all-wheel drive (AWD) at additional cost-notable differences compared to the Subaru Crosstrek.

The Honda Sensing Driver-Assistive features are standard on all three trims and include adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, and lane-keeping assist, with a handful of features reserved for the top trims. Behind the rear seats, the Honda HR-V offers 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 55.1 cubic feet with the second row folded.

Which Subcompact SUV is Right for You?

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek starts at $26,995 and spans seven trims, including two hybrid and one off-road variant. The 2026 Honda HR-V starts at $25,500 and offers only three trims, each with standard-equipped with FWD, or AWD for an additional cost.

The Honda HR-V is popular with drivers who want an efficient, agile SUV with a range of standard features. In contrast, the Subaru Crosstrek appeals to a broader Indiana customer base. Standard all-wheel drive (AWD), higher power delivery, greater off-road capability, a more comprehensive safety suite, and seven trims spanning gas and hybrid powertrains give the Subaru Crosstrek greater utility across a wider range of conditions.

Car buyers from Crawfordsville to Indianapolis who want a vehicle that performs consistently and reliably inclement weather, on uneven roads, or when hauling a trailer will discover that the Honda HR-V comes up short. The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek is the better choice for Indiana drivers wanting greater value.
