The History of Subaru
Subaru's first vehicle in the United States, the compact Subaru 360 economy car, launched in Japan in 1968. Few could predict from that vehicle's humble beginnings what direction the Subaru brand would take over the coming years. The Subaru FF1, launched in the early 70s, was the first model to boast the horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine that forms the bedrock of the modern Subaru lineup. The 1975 Subaru 4WD wagon introduced four-wheel drive to the Subaru, a sign of things to come. Subaru launched the electronic continuously variable engine (ECVT) in the US with the Justy in 1987. The Subaru Outback, launched in 1995, was the first sport-utility wagon, and remains a mainstay in the Subaru lineup, where it remains after more than three decades.
